Frequently Asked Questions
How much does jury duty pay?
It depends on the state. Many states pay between $5 and $50 a day, some pay nothing for the first day, and several raise the rate after the first few days. Federal jurors receive $50 a day. See the table for 44 states.
Do employers have to pay you for jury duty?
In most states, no. Of the 44 jurisdictions we cover, 8 require at least some employer pay (Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee). Nearly every state prohibits firing an employee for serving.
Is jury duty pay taxable?
Yes. In the U.S., juror fees are taxable income. If your employer pays your wages and you hand the juror fee over to them, you may be able to deduct the fee you gave back.
